Abstract:
The author discusses a workshop conducted in partnership between the Chicago State Hospital and Jewish Vocational Service designed to give patients with mental illnesses a chance to build the confidence and soft skills that will allow them to move from institutionalization into gainful employment outside the hospital. The workshop teaches the participants while also serving to test their readiness to move on from hospital life. The author outlines referral processes, types of patients served, methods used in the workshop, and follow-up provided after discharge.
