Abstract:
The South African Jewish community is well organized and cohesive, and about two-thirds of its children attend Jewish day schools. However, South Africa is a society in transition, with rampant crime and major change in govemmental and welfare institutions. Emigration, particularly of the young, is accelerating the aging of the community and contributes to a sense of defeatism and insecurity. Yet, the Jewish community remains vibrant.
